Getting started with GIS

When I was in 3rd year of my bachelor, I got the taste of practical GIS for the first time. One of teacher arranged ‘Hands on GIS’ class to encourage us to learn this technology. We performed some basic data collection. Whole class were divided into small groups and ask to collect latitude, longitude & altitude data from different points of our university campus.

We collected location data from each point at 3 meter precision level using GPS machine. Things to consider while taking GPS coordinates:

  • Keep both GPS (US based) and GLONASS (Russian) system for positioning
  • Wait for at least 4 satellite signals
  • Wait untill precision level get less than or equal 3m

All those points were than imported to google earth pro and saved as kml file. Than kml file is converted to shapefile in ArcGIS.
